Congratulations
on passing the part I examination the struggle moves a step
ahead. The worst thing about PLAB examination is that whilst
failing the examination causes grief, passing it rarely causes
joy. More of a sense of relief than happiness!
Now that that the first hurdle is passed, we have to decide
on a couple of things. The second
of these things is how to prepare ourselves for the part II
and career in the UK but the first
is to make sure we are doing the right
thing by thinking of UK!! If we do things simply "with
the flow" we may come to have doubts in the mind at crucia
l times
later. If on the other hand we are sure about what we are
doing and the logic and the rationale, we know that we are
on the right track. To be sure UK is the right plan for us,
here are a few lines of thought you could consider.
- What
are my prospects at home if i dont go to UK ?
If you have the PG of your choice i strongly suggest you
must finish that first, allows you keep your options open.
You could do your OSCE in the meanwhile. You then time your
PG at home and OSCE suitably, so that things simply flow.
- If
you have already done your PG back home, life is even simpler,
you are exploring possibilities of getting an additional
PG degree and specialised experience and some money, great!
Your chances are better as well, so decision making is simpler.
- If
you have plans to settle abroad in the west, with
or without PG at home, UK is a reasonable destination or
a "fuelling stop". Once you are here, the world
appears an amazingly small place. USMLE is simpler from
here and visas are more likely and so are jobs.
Once you have decided on UK, the next thing is to
concentrate on how to make things better in terms of passing
your examination, improving on your CV and how to make your
career tick minimising the time wasted.
Preparation for the OSCE is the first thing,
but parallel would be to prepare yourself for the job market
and career. "It is never too early to study or to pray".
Whilst the PLABMASTER provides the most complete and
comprehensive course for the PLAB, we want it to
be even better by helping you get on even before the PLAB.
Our online course (free on registration for
PLABMASTER) will give you the list of topics and the relevant
tips on how to prepare for those. Audio recordings of those
who have given the exam will give yo an idea of what happens
on that day itself! Our new feature on "What
happened at the OSCE this week" will give you
a reliable account about the newer happenings in the hot-house
on a week-by-week basis! Our other new feature "the
philosophy behind the OSCE stations" explores
the background of the various osce stations. E.g. the various
scandals that have rocked the NHS how that has influenced
the choice of OSCE stations that the GMC wants you to be checked
out on. E.g. this week we have an article on child-abuse and
how the pendulum swings at either extremes of missing the
cases or being overzealous in the diagnosis.
Your seniors will tell you, in terms of teaching technique
and completeness, PLABMASTER is without peer. However, to
stay where you are, you have to run very fast! At PLABMASTER
we take pride in defining training methods and this month
we have revealed our elaborate computerised feedback
system for the mock test which will allow all candidates
to be evaluated during the mock tests as well as during preparation.
This computerised video evaluation system (CVAS) will
allow each of us to have a proper evaluation on lines of the
PLAB-OSCE scoring system. We have always used British patient-simulators
to give you a feel for the OSCE examination and the way patients
sound on that day, but with the CVAS, you have a proper feedback
on what you did right and wrong! More of the CVAS will allow
imrpovements during training itself not just the OSCE mock
examination.Preparation for the job market has always been
the top priority for PLABMASTER and YBES.
Improvement your chances for the job market
is something that goes deeper than the CV. Our YBCC has CV
tips and hints on CV prepration as well as audits and research
work etc. We are putting up CV’s and experiences of
our past candidates to see how they made it in this world
of cut-throat competition. From the 20th of August we have
arranged for career advancement meetings in east ham and excerpts
of those will be added to the YBCC as well.
YB is for your career not just for PLAB!
This
exam is based on clinical assessment in form of OSCE, i.e.
Objective structured clinical examination. In an examination
room, you will find a series of 14 booths known as stations.
Each station requires you to undertake a particular task,
some task will involve talking to or examining the patient,
and some will involve demonstrating a procedure on an anatomical
model for eg. suturing the wound or giving cardiac massage
to the patient (dummy). The examiner will be closely observing
you doing the tasks. Each task lasts for 5 minutes exactly,
with 1 minute between stations.
This
test is to test your clinical and communication skills. It
is designed in such a way that examiner can observe you putting
these skills into practice.

once. These are the “partially sponsored
candidates” paying £375 and need not pay
the £100 on day 1 in UK. Candidates who delay

only for complete sponsorship can be confirmed only
after YB office in Thane receives the completed contract.

lodging facility is available. As
the sponsorship seats are confirmed only on receiving
the completed contracts the option of sponsorship
without the accommodation will be available only after
all the seats for complete sponsorship have been taken
up and accommodation needs to be arranged by yourself
. Kindly
check the website www.plabmaster.com to find out the
status of sponsorship. Those
candidates who have been offered the partial sponsorship
(without accommodation) may wish to withdraw from
the sponsorship scheme. Such candidates will

registration amount will not be refunded. And they
will need to pay full upfront payment for only coaching,
which is Stg. 270.

for the additional administrative work will be borne
by the candidate in the final payback. Organizer will
then not be responsible for the ensuing delay due to
incomplete contract. Sponsorship letter can be dispatched
only after receiving the contract. Financial
implications for the candidate sponsored for step II:
- A
deposit of £35 will be paid by the candidate
to the organizer on day 1 in UK £30 of which
will be refunded OR adjusted with the final payment.
Upfront
payment of £100 will be collected on day 1 in
the UK from complete sponsorship candidates, this
money is non-refundable, even if the candidate does
not pass the examination and gives up his PLAB intentions.
The
candidate will pay the organizer £450 OR £375

of the contract. Those paying after 8 weeks
of getting a job need pay £425 & £500.
The registration amount paid in India is exclusive
of the amount to be paid on passing.
- Even
on passing the exam on 2nd attempt the payback still
remains the same for the candidates doing the partial
sponsorship (wherein the residence is not provided).
Candidate who passes on second attempt, having used
our lodging a second time will add Stg.25 per week.
This is a new addition from August 2004, and this
is because of the limitation on the number of occupants
in the houses provided (not more than 6 candidates
per house and not more than 2 per room). The coaching
is free for the second time in any case.
Implications
for the organizer in the contract:
-
Plabmaster course for Step-II is included in the sponsorship
scheme. Lodging
of approximately 3 weeks (dates of stay as advertised
by the organisers) during before the PLAB-OSCE examination
will be provided to the candidate by the organizer.
This stay period can be altered only with agreement
with the Organiser. If the candidate stays for lesser
period (during the first attempt), no concessions
in the final payment will be given.
- In
the event of the candidate being unsuccessful in the
first attempt of the step II the organizer promises
to extend the same facilities as during the first
attempt of the step II under the same terms and conditions,
except for the additional payment of Stg 25 per week
of stay, payable with the final payment. But
it is the candidate’s responsibility to inform
the organizer of the exam date for the second attempt
at least 4 weeks in advance. If the organizer
is not informed in that period, the accommodation
will not be guaranteed, and the candidate
will have to make his/her own arrangements for stay
for which the organizer will pay £40 per week
all inclusive.
MOST
IMPORTANT: To avoid confusion and misunderstanding
-
Candidate should book air-tickets so as to reach only
on the day (mentioned in the sponsorship letter) the
stay begins. Candidate reaching even 1 night prior
will need to make his/her own arrangements in a hotel.
The hotel charges are approximately £30-£40
per person per night! The
candidate will not get separate room for accommodation,
2 candidates will be accommodated per room. Ladies
will be accommodated separately. Husband and wife
would preferably be kept together, only if
possible. Candidate
may be accommodated as a paying guest in a nearby
house, not in the sponsored house. In such a situation
the house will be properly scrutinized and selected
by the organizer and payment terms -and conditions
will not change. In such a scenario the candidates
will be with the other sponsored doctors through the
day, facilitating group discussions, only to retire
for the night in the said house. The
candidate needs to bring his toiletries viz. bathing
soap, toothpaste, washing powder etc. Some
of the sponsored houses have washing machines. Candidates
normally share these with those from the other houses
which don’t have these machines. The candidate
promises to make judicious use of the same. The washing
machine may be at one of the houses used for the sponsored
doctors, the residents of the other houses will have
to bring their clothes to this machine over the weekend.
This facility is not promised should there be any
unexpected problems including machine breakdown etc.
Sponsored
doctors will have an iron amongst them for their use
which will be given a couple of days before the exam,
as irons have almost always been damaged when left
in indefinite possession of doctors. The iron will
be collected and deposited back at the office by the
doctors, without damage or promise to pay for the
damage. Candidate
will need to cook for. The Organizer will not contribute
in any way for the food, neither money nor the raw
material. Keeping the kitchen and the utensils clean
will always be the candidate’s responsibility.
In some of the houses, the candidates are obliged
to avail of cooked food at an additional payment of
Stg 20 per week. Cooking has been a source of waste
of time for the candidates and cleanliness and fire
hazards to all. Maintaining
cleanliness to the highest order always in the sponsored
house will be at all times the responsibility of the
candidate. Failing which the organizer will deduct
from the deposit the cost incurred in setting the
house right. Smoking
and consuming alcohol or coming to the sponsored house
in an inebriated state will not be tolerated.
Organizer will only help the candidate with the necessary
documents which will assist in getting the visa. Organizer
will not take any responsibility for the visa.
-
In the event of the candidate not availing of the
sponsorship scheme due to any reason (not getting
a visa, unwell, etc) please note that the registration
amount will not be refunded. Though it will be forwarded
for the candidate’s next exam provided candidate
informs the organizer well in advance and subject
to availability of seat.
Clauses
related to the post dated cheque for the sponsorship
scheme:
- Date
on the “post-dated” cheque to be 6 months
from the date of the exam, which the candidate is
taking in the UK. Eg. If the candidate is
appearing on 1st Jan 2000 cheque would be for 1st
July 2000. Post
dated cheque will necessarily be issued by a parent
of the candidate and it is understood that the same
person will have signed as witness on the sponsorship
contract. The
amount on the cheque will be Rs.35,000/- . It
will be necessary for the bank manager to verify the
signature on the cheque. Format of the letter
enclosed herewith. Letter to be issued on the bank’s
letterhead. As
soon as the candidate pays back the due money in UK
the cheque along with the contract will be returned
to the candidate/parent in India, on the address supplied
by the candidate.
- In
the event of need arising for the cheque to be deposited
in the bank it is understood that it will be honoured,
otherwise it will amount to criminal proceedings against
both the candidate and the witness who has issued
the cheque.
Conditions
under which the cheque will be deposited in India by
the Organiser:
- In
the event of candidate being successful in Plab and
has secured a job but has still not paid the Organiser
his dues OR the candidate has not paid even after
passing the exam in first attempt, as agreed to in
the contract. In
the event of the candidate not keeping the Organiser
informed of his/her whereabouts and the progress in
the job search, as mentioned in the contract. In
the event of the candidate being successful in the
Plab and then chooses to come back to India (without
pursuing job opportunities) for whatever reasons. Irrespective
of having passed or failed the Plab the candidate
secures a job (even in countries other than UK) and
has not paid back the organiser his dues, as mentioned
in the contract.
- In
the event of the candidate by passes the Plab, secures
a job and does not pay the organizer his dues.
The
cheque will not be deposited as long as:

the exam in the UK and has kept the Organiser informed
of his/her whereabouts. As
long as the candidate is in the UK trying to find
a job and has stayed in contact with the Organiser. The
candidate and the organiser have had a different,
mutually acceptable, signed agreement about the payback,
in the UK. It is will be ensured by the candidate
that the copy of the same is sent to the Mumbai office.
- If
the candidate is unsuccessful in the Plab and then
chooses to come back to India for good.
Commitment
by the candidate to the "Payable when Able"
offer:
- On
being successful in Part-II, as long as the candidate
stays in UK and looks for a job the organizer will
not expect to be paid back, but if the candidate decides
to come back to India then it is the candidate’s
duty to duly inform the organizer and mutually decide
upon the payment either in UK or India. If
at any stage, the candidate gets an opportunity to
work either in Europe, Gulf, USA, Australia, Canada,
Africa or any other country the organizer will expect
to be paid back for whatever services complete or
part off received by the candidate, at the following
understanding, even if the candidate has not passed
the exam.

Some
of the having opted for the Plab Sponsorship may plan
to take the membership exam in UK. It is now understood
that in the event of the candidate having passed the
membership exam gets to work in the UK without taking
the PLAB exam, the candidate will still be expected
to pay the entire amount promised by the Candidate
to the Organizer. It
is the candidate's responsibility to keep the organizer
informed of the results of the exams and the status
of the search for a job. Till the monetary obligations
are complete candidate promises to contact the organizer
every 6 weeks and keep
him briefed of the progress. Failing which the organizer
will try to contact the candidate and the expense
incurred (£10) will be charged to the final
amount which the candidate has promised to pay.
On
getting a job the candidate will need to pay the organizer
the sum of £450 OR £375
depending on the sponsorship status, Complete OR
Partial. Failure to do so will be treated as a breach
of contract and an interest rate 4% more than the
HSBC rate of interest will be levied on the outstanding
sum on the period beyond 8 weeks.
-
As soon as the candidate gets the result for the exam
a photocopy of the same should be delivered to the
organizer. It is the candidate’s responsibility
to confirm with the organizer that he has received
it.
I
have read the above contract and agree to honour it,
failing which it will treated as a breach of trust.
I declare that I intend to give the exam and work in
the UK immediately. I have been sponsored on that understanding.
Any change in plans, after passing the exam due to whatever
reasons including health etc., I will owe the organizer
the entire sum. Depending on the Complete/Partial sponsorship,
I owe the Organizer £450/375.

will vouch that we go out of our way to look for jobs
as well as clinical attachment for our students.
Sponsored
doctors get our sponsorship letter which can be produced
while applying for visa.
Due
to postal delays it has invariably been seen that the
admit card does not reach in time. This is more important
for step II for visa formalities. For doctors registered
with us, in such cases, we assist and guide you in getting
it in time for the visa. This avoids the need for doctors
to spend time and money phoning GMC !!
- Another
cause for concern amongst
candidates is the long time taken by the GMC to inform them
whether the requested exam date has been granted to them
or not. We will find out for you and inform you of the same.
By this you are mentally prepared for the exam.. This is
often very beneficial as taking the exam in UK involves
a lot of other preparations as well !!

Changing
face of the PLAB-OSCE
In the last few months, the PLAB-OSCE has been getting more
and more interesting, with addition of newer stations and
topics for counselling. Uptill the last few months, the OSCE
was limited to the 96 odd stations which were a part of the
OSCE folklore. In the last few months we have noticed that
there are more and more additions and newer less common area
of medicine have been tackled.
Labour analgesia, drug dilutions, Arthritis management, osteoporosis
counselling, poly-drug abuse all have featured regularly in
the last few examinations. Previous stations have been revamped
so that the girl who used to have amenorrhoea because of a
heartbreak now has it because of job and study stress. Even
the hands on stations have had some additions in the form
of blood gas analysis.
In this space we plan to give you a list of stations that
have happened in the last week with a daily update of the
stations from yesterday. We like to talk to our students to
ask about what happens in the OSCE and we have recordings
of that on our site as well. Stay tuned with PLABMASTER and
you will be tuned to OSCE!
